Stronger Regulations of Crystalline Silica Substances

Stronger Regulations of Crystalline Silica Substances

On September 1, 2024, Australia implemented new regulations to strengthen the management of crystalline silica substances across various industries. These regulations mandate that businesses undertaking high-risk crystalline silica processes provide comprehensive training to workers, develop a risk control plan, and conduct air monitoring. Additionally, health monitoring is required for workers when airborne concentrations of respirable crystalline silica exceed workplace exposure standards. The amendments aim to safeguard workers from the health risks associated with crystalline silica and reflect a commitment to improving occupational safety.

Exposure to respirable crystalline silica is known to cause several serious health conditions. Inhalation of these fine particles can lead to silicosis, an incurable lung disease that can be disabling or even fatal. It also increases the risk of lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and kidney disease. Additionally, exposure can contribute to the development of autoimmune disorders and cardiovascular impairment, making it a significant occupational hazard.

Spartan First can support employers in meeting the regulatory requirements for the new crystalline silica regulations by offering health monitoring for workers. A resource from Safework Australia ( Silica-resources-2024) highlighting employer responsibilities is attached.
